Sing!

Walking in the Blessings of God

A song is never far from the from the lips of God’s people.

We sing songs of joy at the birth of a child. In fact, Mary, the mother of Jesus, broke out in a song after hearing Elisabeth, the soon-to-be mother of John the Baptist, words, “…Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:42-43)

Walking in the Blessings of God

We sing songs of joy as we walk in the blessing and favor of God. We sing songs of distress when we face trouble and tribulation. We sing songs of victory as we “quench all the fiery darts of the wicked,”  (Eph 6:16) that Satan casts our way.

We sing songs of loss when we are mourning as we walk in the shadow of death. We sing as we gather to celebrate the life of the ones we love and comfort each other in the loss of the ones we love. We sing songs to bring our soul and spirit back into focus to God’s power, love and care He has for us.

Isaiah led the people of God in a song when they faced the Chaldeans. They sang, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion.” (Isa 52:7-8)

Voicing our praise to God is a gift from the Holy Spirit. Long before a follower of Jesus discovers Apostle Paul’s solution for holy living to his brothers and sisters in the church in Ephesus where he said “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,” the songs about Jesus are already falling off our lips.

The power of singing is best demonstrated in the character Pilgrim in John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress.  Pilgrim found his feet lifting off the ground and songs breaking from his lips singing, “Blest Cross! Blest Sepulchre! The man that was there was put to shame for me!" The words from the hymn Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, “ Teach me some melodious sonnet Sung by flaming tongues above” should be the prayer of every follower of Jesus as we walk in this world.

Brother and Sister, do you recall the day Jesus set you free from the burden of sin? Do you remember the vows that were given and exchanged between you and Jesus - your promise to allow Him to take control of your life and to replace your sin and death with the righteousness of Jesus and receive the promise made by God to you? To know God promises that  “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” alone will bring a song to the lips of the ones who know Him.

How could our lips not sing the praises of God knowing this great gift that we receive as a child of God, “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

Song of the Savior's power, love and concern flow from the lips of the ones who know Him and the power of the gospel! Sing today the songs of your redemption and renewal and you will find yourself in fellowship with Jesus before the song ends.
