Broken Covenants

God is not fickle. We are. A man and woman will stand before family, friends and the Almighty Himself and will covenant in the bonds of marriage until “death do us part,” only to find themselves living a life in a broken covenant.

This observation is not judgmental but an observation of human behavior. Jesus, when confronted with the inability of humanity to keep their covenants, even that of marriage said:

“Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.” (Mat 19:8)

God knows His creation and takes into consideration the power that sin holds over the lives of the ones He loves. In the wisdom of God, He has made five major covenants with His people throughout history to accommodate the nature of sin and the power of Satan in His creation. All of the covenants revealed the grace and mercy of God. The Noahic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic and the New Covenant were all relevant to the times and seasons of God’s people.

All five of the covenants revealed three major aspects of God. God’s first covenant with Noah was a covenant of grace and long-suffering. God said to Noah:

“And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.” (Gen 9:11)

God’s grace, after the flood of Noah, was clear. God loved His creation (this includes you) and is willing to let you live in sin while He waits for you to love Him back in faith and repentance. This truth is made clear with these words:

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Pe 3:9) 

The last covenant Jesus said was a “new testament in my blood” (1 Co 11:25) The first covenant was written in the heavens with a rainbow of God’s signature, “I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.” (Gen 9:13)

The last covenant was written in the blood of Jesus, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) God did not and will not change His position on sin or sinners, “the wages of sin is death.” (Rom 6:23)

God is not accommodating the sinful behavior of His creation but rather has coveted with His creation to provide a way for them to escape the awaiting judgment. God reveals the truth of this accounting of sin with these words, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” (Heb 9:27)

Have you entered into the final covenant God has made with His creation? The Holy Spirit awaits to lead you into the love of God. If you will acknowledge and repent of your sins; you have taken the first step in entering into the last covenant God has made with His creation.

If you will call on the name of Jesus and accept the blood of His new covenant you will be saved from the judgment that awaits all who reject the “longsuffering” of God. Will you call on Jesus today? You need to do nothing, forgiveness of sin and restoration to God is His work:

“ For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Eph 2:8-9)
